This project is great for the budding archaeologist in your family. I recommend using light brown and dark brown polymer clay mixed fairly well to simulate a piece of sedimentary rock.

Tools and Materials

Oven

Clay working tools (optional) Oven-safe glass container ounce light brown or tan polymer clay ounce dark brown polymer clay

One jump ring

20-inches of leather or waxed linen cord

A small shell, veined leaf or plastic dinosaur

1. Preheat the oven, according to directions on the polymer clay package, usually around 275°F.
2. Condition clay colors separately. Roll each color into a log. Twist the logs together to begin mixing the colors.
3. Mix conditioned clay colors until they reach desired consistency.
4. Form clay into a semi-round shape by rolling it between the table and the palm of your hand.
5. Smash rounded clay into a rough, flat-shaped disk to between ‘A and ‘/2 inch in thickness. Don’t worry if the flattened disk isn’t exactly round. I recommend that it look rough, so that it appears to be a natural fossil chipped out of stone. If you want, you can use clay tools to rough up the edges to add to the natural look.
6. Press your shell, leaf, or dinosaur into the prepared clay disk. Remove it to reveal your cool fossil impression.
7. Insert the jump ring in the top edge of the clay disk. Make sure to insert the open end of the jump ring into the clay; otherwise, your pendant hanger will have an opening. Leave enough of the ring outside the disk to create a loop to hang your pendant on your cord.
8. Bake clay according to package directions. Let the pendant cool completely.
9. String your completed necklace onto the cord. Tie the end of the cords together to complete your necklace.
