Pasta Brooches and Necklaces
You will need :
Pasta in different shapes and sizes. Brooch mountings.
Shirring elastic [thread] from necklaces.
Strong adhesive.
Stiff cardboard for base.
Enamel paints, poster paints and varnish.
The pasta in your kitchen cupboard can, of course, be cooked and eaten with a beautiful sauce. But there is another way to look at spaghetti and its relatives — as the raw materials of cheap, bright and original jewelry.
Thanks to Italian culinary inventiveness, there are myriad shapes to choose from. Start with the familiar spaghetti and macaroni, chopped up and arranged in graded lengths for an art deco look, then move onto little rings, shells, wheels and occhi di lupo’ or wolf’s eyes.
Use them singly, arrange them in rows and clusters, paint them in muted or brilliant colours, then fix them with a dab of glue. By combining different colours, by cutting the pasta shapes and arranging them cleverly, it is possible to build up pieces of jewelry that bears no relation to their originally humble and familiar components.
Brooches and pins
Begin by cutting out a base shape from a piece of stiff cardboard. Paint the pasta pieces with poster colours or coloured inks, and finish them off once they are dry with a coat of clear varnish for sparkle. Alternatively, use glossy enamel paints.
When the pasta is dry, check the arrangement on the cardboard base, and then anchor the pieces in position with a suitably strong adhesive.
Finish off the brooch with a suitably-sized jeweler’s finding glued to the back of the cardboard.
Necklaces
Tubular pastas make ideal beads. Paint the beads as above and thread them on black shirring elastic thread — choker necklaces can be pulled on over the neck without requiring the extra complication of a clasp.
Other varieties of pasta can also be threaded — with a little care. A hole can be pierced through a shell shape, for example, using a sharp darning needle.
